Planning for Taking Action Lessons

Lesson 5 in each unit is designed to support students to develop knowledge and skills to plan for and take action to support their policy preferences. In Units 4, 5, and 7, the teacher has a choice about how involved the action product students create will be. There are three options in each of these units:

  • Option 1: Draft an Action Plan [least involved]: Students brainstorm, draft, and solicit feedback on a written plan for taking action.
  • Option 2: Create an Action Product: Students brainstorm and draft a plan for taking action and then create an action product based on that (e.g., write a letter to the editor, prepare testimony for a neighborhood meeting, or create artwork)
  • Option 3: Create an Action Product and Present to an External Stakeholder [most involved]: Students brainstorm and draft a plan for taking action, create an action product, and present that product to an external stakeholder.

The teacher should decide which option to pursue before they teach the lesson as it will impact the materials they need to prepare in advance for students. See the Lesson 5 lesson plans in Units 4, 5, and 7 for more details.
